Question Friday is a new feature on the site which focuses solely on you, the Tomb Raider fans. The community is a passionate and vocal group who are not only intelligent but also interesting. Each person has their own opinions on the franchise and their own experiences. Hopefully with this feature we'll unearth some information about eachother and strike up some new conversations.
Since this is the first question, naturally it should be about how you were introduced and later became a fan of the series. Whether you were introduced to the games through a family member, cosplay, or just by browsing on the shelves of a video game store.
Many of us have friends online that we talk to through written communication only, and while it certainly has its benefits, it can sometimes be difficult imagining a human face behind the words. Finding out about how others were introduced to something you share a passion for can help build this connection. :)
How did you become a Tomb Raider fan?
You can answer in the comments below, write on our Facebook wall or send us a message on Twitter. I look forward to reading your stories!

Great idea for a feature! As for myself, I became a TR fan almost by accident, though I like to believe fate was involved on some level. Back in early 1997, a friend of my husband's gave him a copy of the original Tomb Raider. He got as far as the fire pillars in the Palace Midas level. He must have tried a hundred times, but he just couldn't beat that section. He finally gave up in a rage and threw the game into the garbage. Poor thing. :( Anyway, I fished the CD out of the bin and decided to give it a try. Of course I started back at the training level, but it didn't take long before I was hooked. So basically his loss was my gain!
ReplyDeleteFor many years I stuck with my venerable Amiga A500, but eventually it was obvious that PC (as in IBM format, Windows etc.) was the way to go, so bought my first one (Pentium 120, Windows 95). I immediately headed for the bargain games rack in the shop and got Tomb Raider (the original), Command and Conquer (the first one) and a couple of others. Loved TR (and C&C!) and never looked back.
ReplyDeleteI got it by accident of release day back in 96 - my then GF accidentally got me Tomb raider when I had asked her to get me a copy of Exhumed, she couldn't remember the name of the game I wanted and did some guess work with the shop assistant and they narrowed it down to Tomb Raider - A joyous mistake!
ReplyDeleteI was introduced to the Tomb Raider series almost 15 years ago when my parents bought my sister the first three games for her birthday. I was pretty young at the time so there was an element of jealously when she unwrapped the titles. She reluctantly agreed we could play together after I bugged her constantly about it. We ignored the natural order that we should have played the games in and just went straight to the third title. Being a typical teenager, her social life soon took precedence and she spent a lot of time out of the house with friends. Surely if she was out of the house...she wouldn't notice the games going missing? After all I was her younger sister and we always had some sibling rivalry.
ReplyDeleteI think she did notice that I was playing the games. I really suck at being stealthy and given my performance in Hitman:Absolution, I didn't improve all that much. However I was having a lot of fun exploring various tombs and solving puzzles, so she didn't mind all that much. I just had to make sure I didn't damage the discs.
I'm not too sure why I was so fascinated by the games before I even tried them, but there was an urge that I NEEDED to play them. Perhaps it was Lara being on the front of the case which attracted me; I think at that age, you search for role models, which you can relate and aspire to be like. I don't mirror Lara, but we have similar qualities such as long brown hair, being British, and having an interest in history and mythology. I think she was close enough that I hoped that in some way, as I grew up, I would become something like her.
Tomb Raider was the first game that I got with my first ever console, the PlayStation.

ReplyDeleteMy first contact with Tomb Raider was in 2011 when I picked up a copy of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light after receiving an e-mail from Microsoft saying that it was on sale. I was 17 at the time. I purchased Tomb Raider: Anniversary in 2012 and I got the Tomb Raider collection on Steam later that year. From then on, I was hooked.
ReplyDeleteI got to play TR2 in 2008 when i went to my school library. You were able to borrow CDs from there for 2 days. So i borrowed 2 CDs and on the CDs, there would be trailers, demos, of various games or files. So my brother saw TR2 demo version and put it on computer so he could play it. It included only the first level, The Great Wall, and i was sitting by him, as we tried to found out, how to jump foward, becuase we only new how to move, shoot, and jump up. He rage quited and then i tried. I remember that i replayed that level so many times, i know everysingle bug/shortcut to end of the level :D
ReplyDeleteI picked up a pre-owned TR3 for the Playstation many years ago - tried to play it, but having absolutely no inkling of what I was looking for, I spent hours at the bottom of that spike-filled slope, without ever getting any further! It was only when my brother visited and I mentioned it to him, he showed me where the switch was (to someone who had no idea what they were looking for, it was virtually invisible). So I finally played it about 6 months after acquiring it, and now play the entire series through from start to finish at least once a year. Got to say TR3 is probably still my favourite though :D
